Marking the 10th anniversary of The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK)’s retitling, EdUHK hosted the “Caring Together Walkathon” and the Hong Kong Marathon 2026 EdUHK Running Team Kick‑off Ceremony at its Pak Shek Kok Sports Centre on 10 January 2026. The event brought together over 500 participants, including alumni, students, staff, partner organisations, and members of the public, in a collective effort to convey community care and positivity.

The Walkathon symbolised mutual support in times of change and challenge. The event featured a new pet-friendly initiative, where 30 dogs joined the walk, and special medals and gift packs were arranged for the pets to enrich the experience and celebrate companionship.

The event was officiated by Secretary for Security Mr Chris Tang Ping-keung, EdUHK Deputy Council Chairman Professor Terence Chan Ho-wah, Council Treasurer Ms Imma Ling Kit-sum and President Professor John Lee Chi‑Kin. The occasion also brought together more than 10 sponsoring guests and community representatives, as well as Mr Kwan Kee, Chairman of the Hong Kong, China Association of Athletics Affiliates. Olympic bronze medallist Miss Lee Ho‑ching and Asian Games bronze medallist Miss Gina Chen Suijin joined as Walkathon Ambassadors, amidst an atmosphere of energy and community spirit.

Mr Tang said in his opening address, “Today’s event, themed ‘Walking Together with Care,’ carries profound meaning. ‘Care’ is the original aspiration of educators and the driving force that propels society forward; while ‘Walking Together’ represents the concrete action of linking this aspiration and driving force. The value of education is not confined to nurturing students within the classroom, but also lies in offering timely support to the community in times of hardship—just as EdUHK previously provided teaching and emotional support to students affected by a fire in Tai Po. This embodies EdUHK’s spirit ‘Education as the foundation, care at heart.’ I hope today’s event will allow this belief to extend beyond the campus into the community, and ultimately gather into a warm force that drives society forward.”

Professor Terence Chan noted, “Over the past two months, the Tai Po community has endured tragedy, and many residents and families have faced difficult times. On behalf of The Education University of Hong Kong, I would like to extend our deepest condolences to all those affected.”

Professor John Lee said, “Over the past decade, EdUHK has remained steadfast in its commitment to education, driven by compassion and a mission to nurture future-ready educators and social leaders who embody strong ethical and social responsibility, uphold positive values, possess critical thinking, embrace a global perspective, and adopt a future-oriented mindset, while contributing to both the local and national development.” He also encouraged participants in saying, “As long as we support one another and move forward side by side, no matter the pace, we will ultimately reach our shared destination.”

At the EdUHK Running Team Kick‑off Ceremony for the 2026 Hong Kong Marathon, the University rallied support for its marathon runners, showcasing the united spirit and determination of the University’s staff and students. Mr Kwan Kee and EdUHK Vice President (Administration) Dr Tom Fong also attended the event to cheer on the team, offering encouragement and blessings.

Thereafter, participants of the Walkathon set off from the EdUHK Sports Centre and completed a 4.5 km route along the Pak Shek Kok Promenade. They cheered each other along the scenic route, creating a lively, uplifting atmosphere. The University provided all participants with commemorative event T-shirts and gift packs, expressing its commitment to promoting healthy living and community engagement. The medals and gift packs for dogs proved especially popular among families and younger participants. The event further featured a variety of booths, including free face painting and instant photo frame experiences, leaving participants with lasting memories.
